Same door.
A different key plan.
If you want to rekey locks in Dublin, Ohio, start by identifying which keys should stop working and who should keep access. Rekeying concerns the key arrangement of suitable existing hardware; it does not repair every door problem.
A missing copy and a worn lock need different decisions.

A previous occupant, a departed employee or an unreturned spare can leave uncertainty even when a lock works smoothly. Describe the copies that may remain in circulation and the entrances you want included. The point of the conversation is the intended access arrangement, not simply the number of keys you currently hold.
Where existing hardware is appropriate for the work, rekeying may allow a different key arrangement while retaining the lock. The actual cylinder, compatibility and condition need review. A manufacturer’s general rekeying information is not a promise that every lock, warranty or product is covered by a particular service request.
Count entrances before counting keys
For a home, distinguish exterior doors from shared building entrances and from a keyed connecting door to the garage. Physical locks, keypad permissions and handheld garage controls can be independent systems. Our move-in handover guide keeps those items in separate parts of the inventory.
For a workplace, record which door belongs to the leased unit and which is controlled by building management. Identify the authorized keyholder who can approve the change, and describe who will need working keys afterward. Discuss broader workplace arrangements through the commercial locksmith information.
One key is a goal, not an assumption
If you want compatible entrances to share a key, make that preference explicit. Locks that look alike may have different keyways or internal arrangements. Conversely, a different exterior finish does not by itself establish that matching is impossible. The hardware needs assessment rather than a conclusion from appearance alone.
Keep unreliable operation on a separate list. A sticking bolt or loose handle may need lock repair or replacement, even if key access also needs to change. Rekeying should not be described as a cure for a damaged mechanism or a door that fails to latch.
Agree on the handover
Give the actual address, number of affected locks, any working keys you still have and the person who controls each entrance. Ask what identification and permission are needed. For a rental, establish the property manager’s process before including shared or owner-controlled hardware.
Before approval, discuss the proposed estimate, the keys included and what remains subject to inspection. At handover, ask how the agreed arrangement will be checked. A clear inventory is more useful than assuming every old physical or electronic access device changes together.
A couple of useful questions
Is rekeying the same as installing a new lock?
No. Rekeying concerns the key arrangement of suitable existing hardware. Replacement changes hardware and may be proposed for a different reason.
Does a rekey reset a garage remote?
Do not assume it does. Include electronic controls as a separate item and confirm the applicable support and scope.
